La Marinera was declared a nature reserve in 2010 to protect olive ridley turtles(Lepidochelys olivacea), which can be seen between July and December. They arrive alone or in groups. In November 2022, the arribada accounted for 24,110 loras (Kemp's ridley) turtles in just two days! They lay their eggs. The baby turtles appear around 45 days later, and set off for the ocean on a long and perilous journey. La Marinera can be reached at low tide in about an hour, following the beach and crossing rivers.
