Located on the shores of Lake Nasser, this 30,000 km2 reserve has been classified as a biosphere. The fauna living there consists of extremely venomous vipers, numerous invertebrates and sixteen species of birds. The Bejas nomads inhabit the region. They look after livestock, extract charcoal, copper and nickel, and also collect medicinal herbs. The wadi is also famous for its rock inscriptions and gold deposits. The climate of Wadi Alaqi is extremely arid with rainfall of less than 5 mm, although rainfall in the Red Sea Hills is higher
