Situated in the north-east of the Rosette branch of the Nile, Lake Bardawil is a lagoon with a depth of no more than 3 metres. It is considered to be one of the three main lakes of the Sinai Peninsula. Very salty, it is separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a narrow sandbank and covers an area of 460 square kilometres. Its purpose is to replenish the fauna and flora of Lake Menzalah. The name "Bardawil" is the Arabic version of the name of Baudouin, the name of five crusading kings of Jerusalem. The lake is located in an area that, during the Crusades, was disputed between the territory of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and Egypt.
