The El Omayyed Reserve, which covers nearly 800 km2, is located in the interior plain 50 km west of Alexandria. There are sand dunes, swamps and saline surfaces. The reserve protects the biosphere from Lake Mariout, with 70 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles and amphibians and 500 species of insects. Several species of wild plants grow in this area and most of them have medicinal virtues. Mammals include the Dorcas gazelle, the endemic Mediterranean rat, the fennec and the red fox. Also gazelles, golden jackals, fennecs, North African rats.
