The first hermit monks isolated themselves on the island at the beginning of the 17th century. The hermitages were founded in the 17th-18th centuries and remained, until the revolution, places of severe retreat and ascetic prayer. The island gave many saints and later martyrs to the Russian Church. From 1923, it housed the camp hospital. The division of the SLON was reserved there for the clergy and political prisoners, who were particularly violently abused. A few monks live there today. Attention: there is no trade on the island, so be sure to bring a snack!
