147 km north of Edmonton, along the Athabasca River at the end of Highway 2, Athabasca has a population of nearly 3,000. Known as Athabasca Landing Trail until 1904, it was renamed Athabasca in 1913. The town had its heyday during the Klondike Gold Rush when it served as a staging area to transport prospectors north. Athabasca University and its 900 employees manage an annual budget of $30 million and a library of 100,000 books dedicated to 500 academic programs. The area's historic buildings and the annual snowmobile rally make the town famous.
