On the other side of the Steno, the isthmus that separates the two wings of the butterfly, Maltezana is a charming seaside village. Its name probably derives from the Maltese pirates who used the area as a base from which to explore the surrounding countryside during the Byzantine period. You'll also hear it referred to as Analipsi, the name given to it by the Italians during the occupation: both are used interchangeably. As flat and verdant as the capital is steep and arid, this fishing village is renowned for the quality of its fish. It gives access to the northern region of Astipalaia, and there are a number of pleasant beaches nearby.
