With more than 21 000 inhabitants, this large town is built around its airport and mainly lives in coffee. The city has large parks, a theatre and organizes two festivals each year, including the spectacular Goroka Show. People in the Eastern Highlands province are known among the mountain population to be the most disciplined and, while still vigilant, the atmosphere is really less stressful than in Hagen or Kundiawa. In the 1930 s, Goroka was among the first Australian colonies whose settlers, without gold, quickly grasped altitude to install coffee plantations. Still today, we can see some vestiges of these colonial times in town. The main attraction of Goroka is its very popular "Goroka Show Festival", but the city is also an ideal base for excursions in the surrounding villages and forests.
