Located 80 km southeast of Mahajanga, the Anjohibe caves consist of a series of dark rooms and tunnels (almost 11 km long!). Spelunkers from all over the world visit these caves. A powerful torch is recommended to admire the rock formations (stalagmites can exceed 10 m in height). As well as visiting the caves and ascending the underground river, there's a magnificent natural pool in the rock. You can also descend the torrent to the mangrove swamp, go as far as the fishing village, and return by pirogue (superb if you're lucky enough to have high tide at the end of the day). Nearby, the Mahafanina waterfalls are an ideal picnic spot.To get there, turn left after about 20 km on the road to Tana and head north towards the Mahajamba bay. Access via this track (approx. 60 km) requires a 4X4 vehicle (and only in the dry season from April to October). Allow 3 to 4 hours for the journey. En route, you can observe cashew plantations. On the way back, it's worth seeing the lemurs at the forest station, 18 km from Mahajanga (6 km from the fork).Entrance fee: 15,000 Ar, guide: 10,000 Ar.A bivouac is recommended to make the most of the site and its magnificent scenery. You can stroll around Mahajamba Bay and up the Sofia River to the RN 6: ideal if you intend to continue north towards Antsohihy, Ambanja and Nosy Be or Diégo-Suarez.
