PREAH KÔ
The first Khmer temple built in Angkor around 880, with numerous false doors. Indravarman founded his capital Hariharālaya here.
Preah Kô, meaning the sacred bull (for Nandi, one of Shiva's vehicles), is the first Khmer temple ever built in Angkor, circa 880. It was here that Indravarman I founded his capital Hariharālaya. Formerly known as Baku, it is a group of six towers aligned in two rows. Its many false doors are of great richness. The decorations on the corners of the facades were modelled in lime plaster, which has unfortunately disappeared in many places. It was only excavated in 1932 by the École française d'Extrême-Orient.
