WESTERN MEBON
Western Mebon, built during the reign of Udayâdityavarman II in the center of the artificial lake, with its typical gopuras or towers
The 8 x 2 kilometer expanse of water, which is in fact the largest Bârây ever built by the Khmers, is a vast artificial lake dug to irrigate rice fields, serve as a fish reserve and provide entertainment for the people. In the center, the Mebon temple is said to have been built during the reign of King Udayâdityavarman II. This sanctuary, of which little remains apart from the gopuras, typical towers of South Indian Dravidian architecture, consisted of a large pool some 100 m long, with a terrace in the middle.
