Just 100 km north of Valladolid, the fringe of land east of the port of Rio Lagartos is a nesting area for sea turtles and a breeding ground for many species of birds, including the pink flamingo. It is also the habitat of many endangered mammals, such as the jaguar, the spider monkey and the anteater. To ensure the protection of the fauna, the area was declared a biosphere reserve in 1979. It can be visited on an organized tour from Valladolid or by going directly to one of the coastal villages within the reserve: Río Lagartos, Las Coloradas and Cuyo. This sanctuary is very popular with birdwatchers and nature lovers, but you can also enjoy this natural paradise simply by lounging on its almost deserted white sand beaches. The village of Río Lagartos is a charming stop, with its fishing boats and its cemetery facing the sea. Please note that there are no ATMs.
