The Santa Rita mine operated for more than 300 years, before an accidental flood in its tunnels in 1931 caused the mining company to withdraw and the village of Ojuela to be abandoned. It was connected to countless other mouths and galleries that covered some 450 km over 18 levels. After crossing the bridge, a guide awaits you to provide you with a helmet and lamp to enter this obscure tunnel for 400 metres; there is an exciting museum where you can discover the minerals, the working tools and the living conditions of the managers, the simple workers and even the animals (the mules were born and died in the mine, without ever seeing the daylight...) through many period photos. There, the guide will surely suggest that you continue the visit through another tunnel that leads much higher up to the hill and allows you to observe the bridge and the village from the heights, as well as the magnificent landscapes (and their strange vegetation) around. It should be noted that those with a good heart can try a few zip lines around the mine here and there. On the way back, on the other side of the bridge, don't miss a rusa to quench your thirst, it's a fruit juice and lemonade on a bed of ice cubes, with fresh fruit cut over it before your eyes: exquisite!
