The City of Oxford was founded in 1835 and directly refers to his English cousin. The project was to establish a large university centre comparable to those in Europe. Mission accomplished, since today the city has a huge campus, the Mississippi State University, nicknamed "Ole Miss", which is prominently placed in the ranking of American universities.Oxford is also the birthplace of writer William Faulkner (1897-1962). Literature plays an important role in local cultural life, and it is no coincidence that there are many bookshops here. The city centre is of small size. It is organized around the local court and the place known as The Square. This is where restaurants and shops are concentrated.
