Inaugurated in the early 1920 s, Ebenezer Baptist Church is at the centre of local community life. For almost 80 years, the grandfather and father of Martin Luther King worked here as pastors. During the 1960 s, Martin Luther King began preaching to his father in that same church. After his assassination in 1968, it was his brother who took over before he died suddenly in 1969. Finally, in 1974, MLK's mother and four other parishioners were killed here by Marcus Wayne Chenault, a 23-year-old Afro-American. Today, Ebenezer is a symbol of a community that has been able to assemble and fight against violence and segregation.
