Williamsburg is located 7 miles north of Jamestown, the site where the first settlers settled in 1607. At that time, the present city was only a wooded place that grew gradually on the outskirts of Middle Plantation, founded in 1632. In 1693, the College of William and Mary was established. Then, in 1699, the city was christened Williamsburg in honour of the King of England William III. It will be the capital of the Virginia colony from 1780 to 1699, and the centre of political events leading to the American Revolution. We are here at the heart of what is known as the America's Historic Triangle, composed of the sites of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown, connected among them by Colonial Parkway.
