At the point where the N9 changes direction abruptly to Chipinge to the south and Mutare to the north, lies the small town of Birchenough Bridge. This town is of limited interest to the tourist, except perhaps for the famous iron bridge, designed by the great architect Ralph Freeman, the same man who designed Sydney's Harbour Bridge. Built in the 1930s to span the waters of the Save River, this curious monument is 330 meters long. The bridge is named after Henry Birchenough, founder of the Beit Trust who financed its construction and whose ashes are said to be in one of the pillars.
