On Changsha's Mount Yuelu, this academy, founded in 976 during the reign of Emperor Kaibao and now part of Hunan University, is one of China's four most prestigious historical academies. Unusually for an institute of learning, it has spanned every dynasty since the Song. The greatest scholars have taught here, such as the Confucians Zhu Xi (1130-1200) and Zhang Shi (1133-1181). Come here to admire the superb traditional architecture of the buildings and enjoy the calm of the gardens.
