40 km to the north (by the N-IV after passing Santa Elena) the Despeñaperros pass, a communication route crossing the Sierra Morena, is historically the inevitable passage between Castile and Andalusia. Two millennia have scarred it with decisive battles: Las Navas de Tolosa, marking the victory of the Crusader armies of the Hispanic rulers over the Almohad troops on 16 July 1212, or Bailén, on 19 July 1808, the first great Napoleonic rout. Part of the parade area has become the Despeñaperros Natural Park, a forested landscape of ravines and gorges. We'll be able to see golden eagles.
