This colonial building is the only original Cabildo preserved in Paraguay. Its initial construction dates from 1784, but José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia had it rebuilt in 1817, with the addition of a balcony overlooking the square, from the top of which fifty years later Francisco Solano López gave his patriotic speeches. The Cabildo was restored in 1969 and its museum on the ground floor displays beautiful pieces of sacred art, as well as paintings, weapons, objects and furniture from the period of the Triple Alliance War.
