Pilar, with 32,000 inhabitants and capital of the department of Ñeembucú, is located on the banks of the Río Paraguay, the natural border with Argentina, and the Ñeembucú arroyo. Beautiful colonial houses, clean streets and the proximity of waterways make it a pleasant city. The Ñeembucú crosses the city from east to west to join the Río Paraguay. The Ñeembucú bridge connects the north and south of Pilar. The historic centre, most of the hotels and the bus station are located on the south side. The main axes are Irala and Mariscal López Avenues, which pass in front of the two central squares and the Cabildo. 14 de Mayo Street connects these two avenues. The port is off-centre to the south-west of the city. Pilar is home to well-preserved colonial houses, such as that of Juanita Pesoa (Calle Alberzoni), the youthful love of Mariscal Lopez, or that of the poet Carlos Miguel Jimenez. Stroll along Avenida Mariscal López and around the central squares, where you will find the old Cabildo, the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pilar and a small monument dedicated to the tereré. Pilar also has its Costanera, along the Ñeembucú, with watchtowers and beautiful illumination in the evening. A project is expected to extend it over the next few years. On 2 January, the "Fiesta Hawaiana" attracts thousands of people, who gather to party on the banks of the Ñeembucú.
