CHOPPFEST (INDEPENDENCIA / OBLIGADO)

Since 1977, the town of Independencia, in the department of Guairá, has organized a major beer festival, a sort of Paraguayan Oktoberfest. In this former German colony founded in the 1920s, Paraguayans don't look bad compared to their Old World cousins when it comes to the volume of beer downed! The Choppfest is also an opportunity to showcase well-preserved Germanic traditions (dances, gastronomy...). A Choppfest is also organized in the south of the country, in Obligado (Itapúa), at the same time.
