The small Afro-descendant community of Kamba Cua celebrates the African Magician King with joyful dancing and explosive drumming.
Kamba Kuá (or Cua) is a district of Fernando de la Mora, a suburb of Asunción, and a symbol of African culture in Paraguay. This community of 2,500 inhabitants is descended from former African slaves who arrived two centuries ago from Uruguay. They accompanied the libertador José Gervasio Artigas in his exile. Kamba Kuá has preserved its traditions through music and dance. Saint Balthazar, the African Magi King, is celebrated on January 6. A grand celebration with candombe presentations, pulsating dances to the rhythm of tamboriles (drums).
