Cultural Foundation dedicated to Giorgio, consisting of eight research centers on the arts in San Giorgio Maggiore.
In 1951 Count Vittorio Cini bought the cloisters and part of the monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore, which had been closed 150 years earlier by order of Napoleon. In 1953, after restoration, he set up a cultural foundation dedicated to his son Giorgio, who died in a plane crash in 1949. Consisting of eight research centers for the arts, the foundation offers cultural events related to art history, literature, music and science. From the old monastery you can still admire the Cloister of the Cypresses (1616) built by Palladio, which gives access to a park where the Teatro Verde (1951), an open-air amphitheater, is located. Further on, the Cloister of the Laurels, built between 1516 and 1540 by the Swiss architects Bruora. From here you can access the refectory, which was originally decorated with Veronese's The Wedding of Cana , brought to France by Napoleon and now in the Louvre. Two libraries complete the ensemble: one by Baldassare Longhena in the 17th century and the other in the former monks' dormitory. From here you can see a curious hedge maze, created in honor of the Argentine writer Borges in 2011. The latest addition to the foundation is the Stanze del Vetro (Glass Rooms), a space dedicated entirely to the art of glass, which regularly hosts exhibitions and conferences on the subject. In the same complex, lo Squero is an auditorium with a fascinating architecture, whose tops seem to float on the waters of the lagoon.
