With its 190 km2 and 800,000 inhabitants, Butembo is the second largest city in North Kivu after Goma. On the main avenue Mikundi, where several businesses and administrative offices are located, traffic is not very heavy. At Butembo's central market, it's impressive to see how vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles mix with the tshukudus, with pedestrians indifferent. It's the Butembo countryside that has the most to offer tourists. Kiswahili is the language of communication. Lingala is also spoken. Visitors can marvel at the festive atmosphere in the bistros or the devout atmosphere in churches such as Butembo Cathedral.
