WESTERN PROMENADE

Walking along this beautiful boardwalk, one has a view of Fore River and South Portland on one side, and of the beautiful 19th century American bourgeois homes on the other. This neighborhood was built after the great fire of 1870. It is here that we will see the west mansions, the largest in the city. Several architects have left their mark here, as well as in the perpendicular streets, Bowdoin and Pines Street for example. Many of the houses are covered with cedar bark (shingle), in the purest New England style.
