Springfield Capitol that played an important role in the political struggle between Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln.
This institution was associated with Lincoln from the time the groundbreaking was held in 1837. As a legislator, Lincoln had been very influential in moving the Illinois state capital from Vandalia to Springfield. During the years leading up to the Civil War, the building played an important role in the political struggle between Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. It was here that he made his famous 1858 "House Divided" speech. It was also here that a crowd of 75,000 people came to pay their respects after his assassination in May 1865.
