GRAND CHATEAU D'ANSEMBOURG
It is home to sumptuous gardens designed in the 18th, open to the public free of charge. An ideal place for a picnic.
The name Ansembourg appears in the archives from 1135 onwards and it is at this period that the first medieval castle appears. The Renaissance castle, located in the Eisch valley, dates from 1638. It has an imposing baroque portal decorated with the coat of arms of the Marchant d'Ansembourg family. The castle is surrounded by a magnificent classical garden, designed in the 18th century, terraced with statues and water jets, and stretches over 3.5 hectares. The park (1719 and 1750) is dominated by the rear facade of the castle (1719) flanked by two square towers connected by a vaulted loggia with arcades with statues representing the continents.
Over the past twenty years or so, restoration work has been undertaken on the gardens and buildings to restore the site to its full beauty. The mythological alleyway of the garden has been carefully restored, as have the retaining walls of the terraces, external staircases and fountains. A third phase of renovation has begun and consists of the consolidation and restoration of the central building, the oldest of the castle.
Numerous events are organised on the site throughout the year, notably at the beginning of August, with the Grand-Château festival, or during the Heritage Days in September. It is also possible to rent the castle for private events. The gardens are closed to the public during the rental period.
