One might think that his name, no matter how original, could be included among the major historical ports in the region, such as Moka, Aden, Zanzibar or Muscat. Yet that would be a mistake. Port Sudan is a 1905-year-old town, founded in by English settlers to serve as a deep water port, which is necessary at the time for the English crown as a result of the increase in maritime traffic linked to the Suez Canal. The town has been set up on the edge of a cove that stretches over several hundred metres in the land. It replaced the mythical Suakin as a port outlet of a whole country. Through its port, millions of goods circulate each year. Port Sudan is, among other things, the terminus of the great Sudanese pipeline coming from the southern lands, and the railway line coming from Khartoum, the real umbilical cord of the capital.Port Sudan was popularized in France by the eponymous novel of Olivier Rolin (Prix Fémina 1994), who only spoke few of the city in his book. This one, largely inhabited by Fiers, also has, historically, been an Indian community and many Christians.Although this depends on the season, Port Sudan is not necessarily a hellish furnace, as is sometimes the case on the coasts of the Middle East and East Africa. Its atmosphere as a large commercial port in the province has something that you will not find anywhere else in the Sudan!
