The ancient town of Kawa stretched on the east shore of the Nile 50 kilometres south of Kermah. The Kushites kings and Egyptians embellirent him several times, especially under Tutankhamun who built a temple dedicated to Amun. Kawa was gradually abandoned, however, with the erosion of central power in Merowe in the th century of our era. Undermined by the elements and partly forgotten, Kawa was repeatedly searched during the XX century and several of his treasures brought to Europe, before being again covered by the sands. If the site of the city is vast, there is little left to see on the surface.Kawa is located a few kilometres south of As-Selim, west of the main road along the Nile. There are signs, although hardly réperables, beyond a sand field near the fence protecting the site. You can join As-Selim in boksi (1 SDG) from the station near the central mosque of Dongola, but you will have to rent a taxi to go to Kawa (30 to 40 SDG), or to walk along the river if you are brave, with lots of water and available time. The visit is free.
