Musawwarat is a mysterious site. Dating back to the méroïtique era, it is still unclear what its function was. The most likely version is that which evokes a fleeting religious capital, based near a large basin (hafir) erected in the desert, according to the will of a sovereign of Merowe in opposition to the traditional clergy. The construction of the palatial complex never seems to have been completed, fueling the thesis of abandonment of the site after the death of its founder. The numerous performances of elephants and the proximity of a water point have also brought to mind the possible presence of a sacred centre where the pachyderms, who have now disappeared from this region, have been present.
