PLACE DE LA VICTOIRE (ПОБЕДЫ ПЛОЩАДЬ)

Also called the rotunda square for its circular form, the centre is the obelisk of Victory, granite, built in 1954 in honour of victory over Nazi Germany. In 1980, under the square, a commemorative hall was opened with plaques indicating the names of 566 heroes of the USSR who fought in Belarus. The square is surrounded by a set of buildings built in the 1950 s by the German prisoners. In these houses were fortified with symbolic capsules containing the ashes of the Soviet hero-cities.
