From Tsihombe to Betanty, the track, lined with sisal and baobab trees, is smooth and well-maintained. Large Antandroy tombs stand on either side of the road. Betanty is a small village of straw huts. The water of the 20 km-long lagoon is transparent: a beautiful and peaceful end of the world. During the austral winter, whales and dolphins glide across the nearby ocean. You can take a pirogue ride and look for æpyornis eggshells on the sand: it's forbidden to pick them up. From Betanty onwards, the beaches are covered with the eggshells of these very large fossil birds (3 m high), which probably disappeared around the 10th century.
