Read moreThis temple built by Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century is dedicated to Shiva. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Brihadeeswara Temple of Thanjavur and the Gangaikondacholisvaram. This magnificent complex of Dravidian architecture is relatively well preserved. The complex has a theertham (sacred basin) connected to the Cauvery River. A small museum is located to the right of the entrance, with beautiful sculptures and some mural paintings from the Chola period.

Read moreThis large basin (theertham) located in the heart of the city would fill with the water of the Ganges every twelve years. Thousands of pilgrims flocked to bathe there. On a daily basis, water comes from the Cauvery River. The population uses it to perform its ablations, wash and do its laundry.
