The international poetry meeting dates back to 1964, when a poet from Gjakovë (Đakovica), Din Mehmeti, organized a public reading of poems in the city park. It was so successful that in 1966 the literary club Gjon Nikollë Kazazi was established. Since 1983, this meeting awards the best poem. In the 1990s, due to the political situation in the country, the meeting was moved to Prishtinë (Priština) before returning to Gjakova (Đakovica), its home town.
