The culture of coffee, which once lived Bakouma, has long disappeared for the benefit of the uranium that has brought hundreds of Central Africans, from Bangassou or Bria, and for some even from Bangui. The exploration of a uranium deposit by the French group Areva has led to many jobs being created. Bakouma was to become a major economic pole and allow the opening of a whole region. In addition to Areva's societal projects, such as the donation of chairs, offices for schools, medical equipment and the project to build a hospital that required the hiring of more than employees.2012 was certainly a turning point for Areva's future in Bakouma. An armed group, close to the Chadian rebels of the Popular Front for Witness Recovery, attacked a Sunday in the month of June on the Christmas deposit where several French expatriates were stationed. If no victim or injured has been reported, this attack is in any case a blow to the activities of the French group and to the safety of its employees. Areva may re-launch the beginning of its work after a first delay of "one to two years" in November 2011. The cost of operations for a deposit estimated at 32 000 tons (compared to 180 000 for the Imouraren site in Niger) is indeed pushing the company's leaders to question the viability of the project. But all of this was written, according to the inhabitants: Indeed, legend tells us that Bakouma, a great leader whose cruelty shook all the villages in the surrounding area, would have been buried alive by his own subjects, tired of supporting his many abuses. Since then, to punish its murderers, the spirit of Bakouma planerait on the city and would maintain it in misery…
