Many abandoned colonial houses, a former hotel des Chasses au charme charme, some parcels of coffee around the city are the only remains of a past of prosperity. The municipality of Bangassou has approximately 25 000 inhabitants in three boroughs: Tokoyo to the east and Maliko to the west, where mainly the Yakomas live, and Bangui-Ville to the north, inhabited mainly by the Zandés and the Nzakaras. They make up two-fifths of the population of the city. Premiers's first inhabitants, the Nzakaras came from Sudan in the th century, joined by the Zandés in the th century, a warrior tribe who tried to retake the territory to the Nzakaras. Alongside these three main ethnic groups, minority groups are found: Les and Mbangui (affiliated with Yakomas), Kpatrés, Mbororo and West African nationals.
