It is one of four mining towns in Botswana, along with Orapa, Jwaneng and Sowa. It was built in 1967, when it was decided to develop a copper and nickel mine in this part of the territory. Originally a simple cattlepost, Phikwe - as it was then called - became, thanks to its extraordinary growth, the third largest town in the region. Today it is equipped with many modern infrastructures: airport, petrol stations, shopping centres, banks, industrial zones, libraries, sports clubs. It is not a tourist destination, but a good stopover for travellers.
