ELEPHANT BREEDING CENTER
Opened in 1987, the Breeding Center is from another era. Each elephant is assigned three carers: the phanit or driver, the second driver called patchghua who feeds the pachyderm and, finally, the mahout who cleans the stalls. Nevertheless, these are elephants destined to be domesticated. They are chained, even the smallest ones, and kept in tin sheds, and the sight is a sight to behold. While the tradition of elephant-back safaris still exists and feeds this center, some lodges have abandoned this practice as a matter of ethics.
