It's Nepal's mythical city, the country's most populous, as well as its political and economic capital. Situated at an altitude of 1,350 m, the former Newar city became the headquarters of the hippies in the 1960s. This is no longer the case: it has become a paradise for visiting trekkers. Despite the pollution and noise that strike travellers as soon as they step off the plane, "Kantipur, the city of a hundred thousand temples" has preserved the charm of its lanes, with their low-slung houses and carved wooden windows, and the gentleness of its everyday life. Illuminated by the smiles of children and inseparable from the casualness of its sacred cows, the capital leaves no one indifferent. Thamel, Asan Tole and Durbar Square may be just a few streets apart, but there's no resemblance in atmosphere. More than ever, this city is a port of call before the discovery of breathtaking landscapes.
