At the Meziadin junction (Highway 37 and 37 A), head west 65 km to Stewart along the frozen Coast Range. You will climb to Bear Glacier and descend to Stewart and its Portland Inlet, the4th longest fjord in the world. During the gold rush, the town's population grew to 10,000 (after 1910) and four daily newspapers were published. After World War I, only 20 people remained. Stewart today has 800 souls and lives in parallel with Hyder (90 inhabitants), an American "land" since it belongs to Alaska. The children of Hyder go to school in Canada, people buy in Canadian dollars and everything is done according to Pacific time.
