Like most towns in the Cariboo District, Quesnel was founded during the heyday of the gold rush around 1860. The small town centre is almost encircled by the Fraser and Quesnel Rivers. The main artery, Reid Street, is very Americanized. Note that the charming little town of Quesnel is the night stop of the Rocky Mountaineer train on its "Rainforest to Gold Rush" itinerary, the only one in the region departing from Vancouver. However, you can only board the train in Vancouver or Jasper, the destination of the tour. Visitors to Quesnel will be charmed by the city's many hiking trails and cultural visits to local museums.
