Halfway between Forécariah and Coyah, a sometimes tricky track starts on the right from the village of Maféréniah (coming from Conakry). It crosses different villages and plantations, before entering an area of swamps and mangroves. We cross a simple bridge to get to the island of Kabak, a charming fishing village, but also a sub-prefecture. It takes a good two hours from Maféréniah. You can ask one of the fishermen on the spot to take you on a pirogue ride in the marshes. Many herons, egrets, pelicans and some flamingos live there.Other villages and beaches can be visited in the vicinity, but you need a good car and a local to guide you. Near Matakan in particular, you will see one of the black sand beaches of the area (beware of the mud!), especially at low tide. The site of Benty, former slave trade, first banana export port to Europe and future ore export terminal, is further away. It is interesting to push the visit to Salatou, on the border with nearby Sierra Leone. To access Benty and Matakan, it is possible to take a pirogue from the port of Boulbinet in Conakry. Count on at least 1h30 of navigation to reach Matakan. A good way to avoid the traffic jams of the capital and to discover the Guinean coast differently.
