The first museum of contemporary art in Texas, featuring Mrs. McNay's fine collection of over 700 pieces
Opened in 1954, it was the first museum of contemporary art in Texas. The beautiful collection, composed of more than 700 pieces gathered by Mrs. McNay, includes mainly works from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, from Gauguin to Renoir, including Manet and Picasso. The museum was built on her initiative, in this restored colonial house. The new wing of the museum was designed by the French architect Jean-Paul Viguier, who also designed the Pont du Gard museum and the new media library in Reims.
