IRON EXTRACTION FROM BELINGA

The subsoil of the Ogooué-Ivindo province is rich in iron. The Belinga region is highly coveted: the exploitation of this deposit, estimated at 200 million tons, is the subject of a concession award. NGOs are concerned and WCS officials remain vigilant about the decisions taken, as the iron deposit is located between two national parks, Minkébé and Ivindo. The ecological consequences of such an activity could therefore be serious.
