The Neblina peak (3,040 m), the roof of Brazil, lies in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, in one of the wildest parts of the Green Hell. It owes its name, peak of the "fog", to the clouds and continuous rains that keep it in a very humid atmosphere, with no real dry season. On the continental divide, the areas draining into the Orenoque and Casiquiare rivers belong to Venezuela, while the areas draining into the Amazon River belong to Brazil. The two territories, with a total area of 3,600,000 ha, have been classified as national parks by their respective countries. The Brazilian zone is called Pico da Neblina National Park, and the Venezuelan zone Serrania La Neblina National Park. The other sandstone mountains, the tepuys, are generally flat-topped, with horizontal strata. At the peak of La Neblina, these strata are folded and the mountain is cut by deep valleys and adorned with sharp peaks. One valley is incised by the Baria river canyon, one of the deepest in the world! The vegetation is typical of this area, and it is estimated that over 50% of the species are endemic. The Neblina peak has a humid Amazonian rainforest climate, with temperatures ranging from 8 to 27°C and an average rainfall of 4,000 mm.
