RUINS OF THE CHURCH OF UJARRÁS

Its construction began in 1570 following an apparition of the Virgin Mary on the banks of the Reventazón River, which is said to have helped repel a band of pirates who had come to lose themselves inland. Rebuilt between 1681 and 1693, it was abandoned in 1833 after floods devastated the village. Go there at lunchtime when the tourists are elsewhere. On the Sunday closest to April 16, a procession leaves Paraíso to carry the Virgin to the ruins.
