A site in Phnom Peth featuring King Norodom's first residence and the Silver Pagoda.

This palace of wood and bamboo was the first residence of King Norodom when he chose Phnom Penh as his capital. Considered too modest for a princely residence, it was replaced by another one, in hard. Work began in 1865 and was completed in 1870. In traditional Khmer style and painted in yellow, the royal color, the palace is built in masonry and has some similarities with the royal palace in Bangkok. Beware, the palace is closed when the king is there. Opposite the Royal Palace and south of the large pavilion, reserved for the king during the Water Festival, stands a tiny pagoda. It is there that the travelers of passage can go to honor the Buddha protector of the travelers. One buys some incense sticks, lotus flowers or a coconut from the street vendors and places them in front of the deity.

The Silver Pagoda, which has the status of a royal temple, is located on the south side of the compound. 500 silver paving stones form the floor covering (one kilo each). There is a collection of gold and silver Buddhas, murals (restored with varying degrees of success by Polish experts) depicting the great themes of the Ramayana.

Other importantbuildings in the complex are the Moonlight Pavilion, one of the most remarkable in Cambodia, which can be seen from the outside as a stage for classical Khmer dance, and the Khemarin Palace, used as the king's residence.
