Saint Sampson (bishop of Dol-de-Bretagne) is said to have landed there in the 6th century to preach Christianity. Its church, the oldest on the island (dating from the 11th or 12th century), is now struggling to breathe between the cranes and the smoking chimneys of the power station. It was from this harbor that the ships loaded with Guernsey granite left. Today surrounded by small houses, it is still active. It is used as a cargo port and a ship repair center. It is thesecond largest city on the island and there are many shops, banks, jewelers, craftsmen... The beaches are not very suitable for swimming.
