West of the mainland. The RSPB reserve of Birsay Moors and Cottascarth is the largest in Orkney, with 2 300 ha of moorland and bogs. Orcadiens still use peat as a fuel. In Cottascarth, to the south of the reserve, an observation hut allows to meet the characteristic birds of this medium, such as le and, with luck, raptors such as the owl owl and saint busard. From the highway A 966 between Finstown and Tong, turn inwards just north of Norseman Garage, 4,8 km from Finstown, then turn right into the "Cottascarth" sign.
